New Guidance Supports 2D Barcode Implementation on Fresh Produce PLU Stickers

As the fresh produce industry prepares for 2D Barcode Sunrise 2027, consistent implementation across the global supply chain will be essential.

Sunrise 2027 is the retail industry milestone for transitioning to 2D barcode capabilities at point of sale. By the end of 2027, retailer POS systems should be capable of reading both traditional and 2D barcodes, supporting a broader shift toward greater product information, traceability and authentication.

The Global Implementation Guidance for 2D Barcodes on Fresh Produce PLU Stickers provides practical direction to help industry members understand and prepare for the use of 2D barcodes on loose and bulk fresh produce. Developed by the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA), the Guidance supports the industry’s adoption of 2D barcodes on PLU stickers in alignment with Sunrise 2027.

Developed for growers, packers, shippers, retailers, solution providers and other supply chain partners, the resource addresses the unique considerations associated with labeling individual fresh produce items, including barcode size, label requirements, data needs, scanning capabilities and coordination with trading partners.

Sunrise 2027 represents the first milestone in what is expected to be a phased transition, with the GTIN serving as the required data element for 2D barcode scanning at point of sale. As adoption progresses, 2D barcodes can support additional data and future traceability, regulatory and data-sharing needs.
